Exploitation of Pat Tillman by the NFL

When sports and politics collide, it can range from tragedy to farce.

Tragedy: The NFL worked hand-in-hand with the Pentagon to exploit the death of Pat Tillman. Pat Tillman turned down millions in the NFL to fight in Iraq, only to turn against the war, calling home and telling his family that he thought the war in Iraq was illegal. Tillman died by "friendly fire" at the hands of US troops.

This fact was withheld from his family during his nationally televised funeral. His death was exploited for public relations and the NFL colluded with the Pentagon for financial gain. That is the most gruesome collision between sports and politics.

Farce: The late Yankees owner Geroge Steinbrenner had police ushers and security guards put up chains along the isles of the stands to keep people in their seats during the 7th inning stretch during the singing of God Bless America. Steinbrenner referred to this as a "patriotic plan to restrict movement during a time to respect the flag." A plan to restrict movement during the "7th inning stretch" is borderline psychotic.

Although not sports-related, such a vile practice is very similar to the minister who tells his ushers to not allow people to leave while the collection plate is being passed around. Years ago, when I attended church about once or twice monthly (today I wouldn't be caught dead in a church), I actually experienced a situation where an usher tried to stop me and my kids from leaving before the final offering and benediction. All I did was give him a look, and he stepped aside.
