The Color Line Endures: How MAGA Policies Widen America’s Divides

The ultra-conservatives—the MAGA faithful, the disciples of Donald Trump—are driven by three unrelenting forces: greed, control, and racism. The hardline conservative, often a white man or woman, will scoff at this assertion, accusing me of "playing the race card." "What does race have to do with it?" they ask.

In The Souls of Black Folk (1903), W.E.B. Du Bois answered that question long before they even dared to ask it. He wrote, “The problem of the twentieth century is the problem of the color-line.” A century later, the truth of that statement still reverberates. Du Bois did not simply speak of segregation as lines on a map or laws on the books. He spoke of the veil—a metaphysical barrier that separates Black Americans from white America’s understanding, an invisible force that ensures our struggles remain unseen, our voices unheard, our humanity disregarded.

Trump and his enablers, in their relentless pursuit of power, have reinforced that veil, thickening it with their policies, their rhetoric, their destruction. His latest onslaught—a dismantling of social safety nets, economic sabotage, and blatant attacks on marginalized communities—only serves to deepen racial and economic disparities. Consider the following:

The Department of Education

The gutting of the Department of Education, including the termination of over 1,300 employees, directly threatens students with disabilities. This agency enforces the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA), ensuring that 7.5 million students receive the specialized services they need. The loss of this workforce jeopardizes speech therapy, special education, and critical accommodations—disproportionately harming students of color, who already face systemic barriers in education.

Food Insecurity

The San Antonio Food Bank, already stretched thin, is reeling from a $3 million shortfall after Trump’s administration cut USDA programs that funded local food purchases. This represents 20% of the food bank’s budget and directly impacts over 120 food producers in Texas. As a result, food insecurity will rise, disproportionately affecting Black and Brown families.

Environmental Justice

With the elimination of "Justice40"—a program designed to ensure that 40% of federal environmental benefits go to communities suffering the worst pollution—Trump has once again prioritized corporate greed over human lives. Black and Latino neighborhoods, already plagued by environmental hazards, will bear the brunt of this policy reversal, leading to heightened health risks and deepened disparities.

Economic Warfare Through Tariffs

A reckless 25% tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada has disrupted billions in trade, driving up costs for businesses and consumers alike. The fallout will be felt most acutely in Black and Brown communities, where job losses and economic instability will spread like wildfire.

The Erasure of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI)

Trump's aggressive rollback of DEI initiatives in both the corporate and government sectors signals a dangerous regression. The dismantling of these programs threatens to undo decades of progress toward fair representation and workplace protections for marginalized groups.

The Velocity of Destruction

The problem with “47” is not just the policies—it’s the speed. He moves like a wrecking ball, smashing through constitutional safeguards, defying legal precedents, and trampling civil rights. In his frantic desperation to reshape America in his image, he is committing acts that will, in time, be recognized as crimes against humanity.

But history is watching. The veil Du Bois wrote about may still exist, but it is thinner than it once was. Trump and his billionaire puppeteers—Elon among them—may believe they are architects of a new order. In reality, they are the architects of their own downfall. Within a year, their corruption, their cruelty, their contempt for justice will be laid bare for the world to see.

And in that moment, their legacy will be sealed—not as leaders, not as revolutionaries, but as some of the most vile and despicable figures of the 21st century.
