My mother was a fiercely protective presence in my life, a quality I once viewed as stifling in my youth. She passed away when I was only 19, and though four decades have passed since then, her spirit remains very much alive within and around me. Her physical absence stirred a deep curiosity, compelling me to explore the mysteries of death, the soul, and the nature of spiritual connection. That journey, spanning years of study, reflection, and experience, has reshaped my understanding of what it means to transition from the physical to the spiritual.
One of the most profound realizations I’ve come to is this: we do not lose our essence when we die. The ego, attached to the physical form, dissolves... but the personality, the soul’s eternal character, remains. My mother’s protective nature did not vanish with her body; instead, it evolved. In the spiritual realm, she continues to be that same loving guardian, only now she operates with divine wisdom, never interfering with free will. Her spirit surrounds me not as a ghost or memory, but as a living presence woven into the fabric of my everyday life.
Though I haven’t seen her in over forty years, I’ve never truly felt abandoned. Her higher self (her true self) has always remained close. I recognize her through the quiet whispers of intuition, through signs that defy coincidence, and through the unexplainable comfort that embraces me during life’s most uncertain moments. These are not empty imaginings, but sacred communications that speak louder than words ever could.
Today, as I was driving and thinking about her... as I often do, especially during my daily affirmations... a monarch butterfly fluttered across my windshield. Later, while paused at a red light, a dragonfly gently collided with the glass. These were not random encounters; they were messages. In many spiritual traditions, monarch butterflies symbolize transformation, rebirth, and the enduring bond between the living and those who’ve passed on. Their long migratory journey echoes the soul’s own epic passage... full of strength, perseverance, and purpose.
Likewise, dragonflies are potent symbols of change, adaptability, and the movement between worlds. From water to air, from unconscious to awakened states, they teach us to embrace the unknown and trust in our inner knowing. Their brief visitations often carry deep meaning, reminding us that life is more layered, more interconnected, than we tend to believe.
Our departed loved ones reach out to us through such symbols - through nature, dreams, intuition, and synchronicities - not to haunt, but to comfort. Their message is consistent and clear:
"I’m still here. I haven’t changed. I am with you always."
These signs are love letters from the beyond, gentle affirmations that our bonds are eternal, untouched by time or death.
In learning to recognize these moments, we open ourselves to a deeper truth... that life is not a line with a beginning and an end, but a sacred circle. In that circle, love never leaves. It simply transforms, travels, and returns.
